Geared Up: Is Samsung’s foldable smartphone a step forward, or just a holiday gimmick?

Tis the season for all manner of holiday announcements from the technology giants, but some new products are more puzzling than others. Samsung’s new foldable smartphone, the Galaxy F, is certainly on the bizarre end of the spectrum.

Samsung showed off the new device at an event on Wednesday, dimming the lights on stage and concealing details of the phone’s design with a boxy case. The device is the size of a tablet when it is extended, but its “Infinity Flex Display” lets it fold in half to become roughly the size of two smartphones stacked on top of each other, still with a working touchscreen.

On the latest episode of Geared Up, co-host Todd Bishop said he is excited about the new phone’s potential and the direction Samsung is pushing the market. Andru Edwards was less enthusiastic. He said that, although the phone may one day be useful, he has concerns about the size and how much will actually be developed for the hardware.

But we’ll have to wait a while to find out: Samsung did not announce a release date for the device or a timeline for when it may come to the market.

Also on this episode: We go hands-on with the new iPad Pro, which is available now. Andru says the device could basically replace a computer, with a powerful processor, a terabyte of storage and a USB C port to connect to a variety of peripherals.

We also discuss the new MacBook Air, Apple’s most popular laptop that has been waiting for an upgrade since 2011. Plus, Todd shares all the updates he wants to see from Apple that haven’t yet arrived.
